About the Event

The program is entirely devoted to Brazilian opera, setting tradition side by side with recent creation. The first part brings together excerpts by Carlos Gomes, the Brazilian composer who conquered the Italian stage in the 19th century: the overture to Il Guarany (1870), two arias from Lo schiavo (1889), among them Come serenamente, in which the Indigenous woman Ilara sings of her love for Américo, and Délia's aria from Fosca (1873). The second part presents recent works: Navegar por dentro, from Marcus Siqueira's song cycle O Tempo e o Mar, on texts by Geraldo Carneiro, and arias from operas created at the Festival's Opera Creation Program (Núcleo de Criação de Ópera) between 2022 and 2025: André Mehmari's A Procura da Flor, based on Machado de Assis' Esau and Jacob; Marcus Siqueira's Contos de Júlia, on short stories by Júlia Lopes de Almeida; Maurício De Bonis' A Profissão da Senhora Warren, based on Bernard Shaw's play Mrs Warren's Profession; and Clitemnestra, also by Marcus Siqueira, a new reading of Aeschylus' tragedy. Ornella de Lucca sings Come serenamente, Navegar por dentro and Cassandra's aria from Clitemnestra.
